Review of The Ocean Between Us by Michelle Heard
4 stars
First up, a trigger warning: There are difficult scenes to read here - detailed scenes of abuse and assault, so be forewarned if you have triggers.
When Emma finally gathers up enough courage to take herself out of reach of her abusive mother's hands, she ends up in a new country in a new culture - the US. Aiden's drawn to Emma from first glance - the beautiful woman who's obviously far too innocent to be at the bar where they first meet. Aiden has a protective streak a mile wide and Emma brings it out a hundredfold! But will he truly be able to protect her when she needs him the most? Or will she end up with the very people whom he's trying to keep her from?
I liked The Ocean Between Us, but I have to confess it didn't hit me in the heart like I expected it to. Don't get wrong, it's well-written, and Aiden and Emma, especially Emma, are great characters with a strong connection, I just didn't get into it as much as I think others did, as I expected to. So perhaps it's a case of it's me, not the writing. I felt their relationship was a tad rushed, and lots of people and things were alluded to but not detailed. That may be because this is a first in a new series, though, so I am hoping people like Zach and Cole and Wyatt, who were mentioned but not explained, will get their own stories. I just wish either things were explained in more detail here, or they were never mentioned at all, for the sake of my own clarity and comprehension.
But aside from the lack of detail and a feeling of being rushed, I enjoyed The Ocean Between Us. It's emotionally engaging and substantive, and Emma and Aiden are wonderful characters. I am looking forward to more of this series.
