Review of Further To Fall by Catherine Cowles
Carter is a new to town teacher with a good friend who's now a famous musician. It's through this friend, Liam, that she meets gruff, scowly MMA fighter, Austin. At first glance (OK, maybe at two and three glances), Austin seems like a complete asshole. He treats Carter like she's some bimbo out to divest Liam of his money, latch onto his fame, or just seduce him into her bed. How little he knew her, though, because Carter is the furthest thing from a bimbo, she's a sweet-natured, amazing person who loves Liam like a brother. When Liam finally gets it through Austin's head how unfairly he's been treating Carter, Austin does the right thing and apologizes. And it's at that point when a beautiful friendship, turned more, begins. And it really was quite beautiful, the way their genuine friendship evolved. From him simply teaching her self-defense, them enjoying getting to know each other, to slowly (and passionately) falling headlong into love - seriously, it was pretty damn amazing to read and experience their journey.
I wasn't sure I was going to dig Austin at first, considering what an ass he was in the beginning, but once his true self came out with Carter's gentle prodding, yep, I was a goner just like she was. But although I did fall for Austin, my favorite part of Further to Fall is Carter. She's the kind of heroine I love most in my romances - sweet and kind, but with a strong backbone, who loves deeply. And Austin was the perfect man for her. They were perfect for each other. Sigh...Further to Fall is that rare story that hits you in the heart with swoony love, makes you laugh, and leaves its mark in a saturated market. Kudos to this author for such a wonderful debut!
