Review of Sweet Poisons (Pretty Lies, Ugly Truths Duets Book 1) by Natalie Bennett
Nova is sort of an introverted hermit. She's got a lot of dark things roiling around in her head and I can already tell she's not necessarily everything that she appears to be. Then she meets someone who's got just as much going on as she, and their attraction burns like wildfire.
Rhett appears mysteriously in Nova's town and not a lot is revealed about him except that he apparently is a killer and bleeds danger. Oh and he's obsessed with Nova and wants to figure out all her secrets, what makes her tick. Can two dark, messed up people really make a go of it when neither is exactly as they appear? Well, we don't find out in this first part of their story because it ends on an abrupt cliffhanger. Damn cliffhanger!
I honestly was not really sure what to make of Sweet Poisons. Not because it's dark, because I love me some dark tales (A. Zavarelli, Tillie Cole, J.M. Walker to name just a few of my favorite dark authors), but because neither Nova nor Rhett is all that likable, for want of a better word. Especially Nova. She's not horribly evil or anything, she's just kinda...there. Oh she's definitely messed up, and definitely not all that she seems, but she's also just kinda bland and off-putting and I'm not sure about her. Rhett isn't much better, but I do think his backstory, when we get it, is going to be interesting. As will Nova's. IF we ever get it!
I will say that I'm definitely interested in where this story is going, so I'm all in for the conclusion of this duet, Sick Remedies.
