MY REVIEW
Oh God, this freakin story had me laughing my ass off. I mean the town's name alone had me going, come on, who really names their town Licking Thicket?! I wonder if the authors were watching old episodes of Cheers or something, and were inspired by Woody's and Larry Bird's rivalry, and Woody's contempt for Larry's hometown of French Lick. Anyway, back to this hilarious, sweet, and sexy story - I loved it. Brooks is an awesome guy, who just had to come home finally, to appreciate what he had left behind. And Mal finding how well he fit there, and was welcomed? It got me in the heart a little. Like I said, Fakers is sweet and sexy, but it's also got huge doses of heart, and that's the best part of this story.
Excerpt
Well, that was unexpected. I’d been knee-deep in ridiculous bovine paraphernalia when I’d finally met Brooks Johnson. The Brooks Johnson. Arbiter of all the pain a head cheerleader and homecoming queen could possibly be expected to endure.
“He’s taller than you made him sound,” I muttered, climbing up the rope ladder to the “guest suite” I’d been assigned for the week. For some reason I couldn’t stop thinking about the asshole in the cow T-shirt. How was it even possible to look sexy in a shirt with a screen-printed cow butt on it?
The man was six feet of pure Ken doll perfection—blond, fit, and model-gorgeous. Exactly the kind of guy I wished was not my type, but was. He was even sexier in person than he was in the photos I’d seen of him in Ava’s scrapbook. In high school, he’d been the quintessential hunky jock, but now… now he was definitely more grown-up with broader shoulders and a thicker five-o’clock shadow.
If I’d had a three-ring binder, I might have had to doodle his name in it simply because he was that pretty. And also sweet. And kind of goofy. I sighed. Leave it to me to think Ava’s ex was all that. I felt like a traitor and had to remind myself he was the enemy.
“He’s a jackass, is what he is. Did you see that poor, sweet man he somehow roped into dating him? If that man’s gay, I’m the queen of Sheba.”
Ava plonked down next to me once we were through the hatch and into the open-plan tree house. And by “open-plan” I meant it was just one room about as you’d expect for a tree house. I was just grateful it had screens on the windows and was big enough to fit a full-sized futon.
“Jesus, Ava. Your childhood tree house was nicer than my childhood real house.” I tossed my duffle down and blew out a breath. I’d spent last night on the sofa in their den, but today more family had come in from out of town and Mrs. Ivey had sweetly but firmly declared Ava’s “city friend” would be moving out to the “guest suite.” I’d gotten excited for a minute until I’d remembered we weren’t in Beverly Hills and Ava’s family lived on a dairy farm. “If I see one spider, I’m catching the first flight out.”
Ava blew her bangs off her forehead. “Good luck getting a ride out of town during the Lickin’. Traffic comes in, Mal. It doesn’t go out.”
I shot her a look and tried not to shudder. This town had great potential for becoming the setting for a horror movie.

About Lucy
After enjoying creative writing as a child, Lucy didn’t write her first novel until she was over 40 years old. Her debut novel, Borrowing Blue, was published in the autumn of 2016. Lucy has an English Literature degree from Vanderbilt University, but that doesn’t hold a candle to the years and years of staying up all night reading tantalizing novels on her own. She has three children, plays tennis, and hates folding laundry.
