Whew, what a ride this has been as Maxime and Zoe go from forced marriage of convenience to truly in love over the course of three installments. When Diamonds are Forever begins, Zoe's finally managed to escape by way of help from her beloved brother, and Maxime is scouring the world looking for her. He goes on a rampage of epic proportions without realizing at first that he brought it all upon himself.
Then began Maxime's period of growth. I'm still not 100% sure he deserves Zoe, but he did redeem himself somewhat by the end and I was happy they obtained the fairytale Zoe had long hoped for. Now, did I fall in love with Maxime? Not really. I still think he's an asshole. What he did to Zoe, taking her and making her fall for him, all while treating her like shit, walking over her feelings, being cold and indifferent to her suffering, yeah, that's impossible to get around. Did I soften toward him by the end? Yes. Could Zoe have done better? Yes. But...the heart wants what the heart wants, and for Zoe, Maxime was it, so he ended up getting a pass from me.
In the end, I can say that this trilogy was darkish and delicious, a bit twisted and beyond steamy, and I was really happy they finally got the happiness they had been on the path toward for so long.
