Imagine Beth's surprise when she finds her new neighbor is the boy she once had serious feelings for, the boy she was best friends with, the boy who's all man now and who definitely dislikes her. Though Callan and she may have messed things up back then, a fake dating arrangement is giving them a second chance to make things right.
Callan never thought he was good enough to fit into Beth's upscale world, so when she dismissed him back in school, he knew it was because of how different their worlds were. But look at them now - he's a lauded soccer (sorry, football) player and she's a PR company owner, and they need each other. In a fake dating kind of way at least. All the close proximity is giving him those feelings again, only this time they can make it work because they know how to communicate with each other. The second chance he didn't know he wanted can be his.
I do so love me a hot Scot, and Samantha's are some of the best written. Callan is a bit grumpy at first, but he slowly reveals why Beth had loved (loves) him so much. He's got a big heart that's as tender as his outside is chiseled. Beth is a sassy ray of sunshine who hides her own anxiety, and the way that anxiety is revealed couldn't have been in a more realistic, heartfelt way. The mental health rep is on point here, and made me fall even more in love with Beth. Second chance love stories are some of my favorite kinds to read, and it's because of ones like Beth and Callan's - chemistry enough to melt my Kindle, enough heart to fill the entire story, and a sweet couple who couldn't have deserved love more.
