Review: Mayhem and the Mortal: A Morally Gray Hero Enemies-to-Lovers Fantasy Romance by Shanora Williams
One mission. One curse. No escape.
Zaira doesn’t want a hero. She needs a weapon.
To save her sister from a soul-devouring curse, she has to cross The Shallows―a nightmare landscape of ruined magic, shifting paths, and vicious creatures that eat people alive.
Her guide? Thane Valkor: sorcerer, assassin, walking red flag. His name clears rooms. His magic kills quietly. And whatever he’s really after, it’s not salvation.
He promises to help. He might even mean it.
But Zaira knows better than to trust a liar with a blade and ice in his veins.
She just doesn’t have a choice.

MY REVIEW
Zaira is on a quest to rescue her sister, from imprisonment and from a deadly curse. She needs help on her quest, and that's where Thane Valkor comes in. He's supposed to be just her guide, but he becomes much, much more. He'll protect her, guide her, and even fall in love with her. But will they survive? Will they be able to rescue Analla?
Wow, Shanora writes some of the best romantasy! Thane and Zaira's world is so dark, but richly drawn, full of all manner of creepy creatures and other beasties. Along their quest, their attraction is heightened, and feelings develop in short time. Theirs is a slow burn with serious tension. Zaira is such a wonderful character - strong, loves her sister unconditionally, and can't resist her morally grey Thane. I do love me a morally grey man, and Thane? Whew! But, and this is the only but, the cliffhanger is brutal and has me seriously worried for them. I know Shanora will write them out of this mess, but I'll be on edge until I lay my eyes on the next installment.
