Blurb
After eighteen years, I’ve come home to the Scottish island of my childhood. It’s the place I vowed I wouldn’t return to so I never again had to see the man who broke my heart into a million pieces.
Yet family has inevitably brought me back, and avoiding my ex, Quinn McQuarrie, is proving impossible when he insists on digging up the past every time we meet.
Quinn is now a single dad, the local contractor, and the person the entire town is rooting for to get his happily ever after. The problem is, he wants me to be his HEA, and I just want to move on. When Quinn sees my plans to save the town’s volunteer lifeboat service as an opportunity to work together, I’m stuck with him. And, unfortunately, I soon realize there’s no denying that the chemistry we share has only grown more intense with the passing of time.
I know Quinn wants more than just a physical relationship, but it’s all I can promise with so much hurt and distrust between us.
However, when strange disturbances escalate to harassment, our lives are turned upside down, and Quinn proves he will do anything in his power to protect me. Even if it means losing each other before we ever get our second chance…

MY REVIEW
Tarran has done the thing she swore would never happen - returned to her small island hometown. While she's back for family reasons, she'll also have to see her ex, her first love who broke her young heart into a million pieces. She probably should have suspected the meddling residents here to keep pushing her and Quinn into each other's orbits, and that's exactly what they've done. Now it's up to her to decide if she wants to give him a chance to explain, and to give him, them both, the second chance he's begging for.
Second chance is probably one of my favorite tropes. But it matters to me if the second chance is deserved. Here in Drifting Dawn, my opinion is mixed. I was rooting for Tarran from the first word. However, I have to admit I never thought Quinn redeemed himself. Did he deserve a second chance? IMO, no, but Tarran deserved happiness, and he's the one her heart chose, so he gets a pass. The rest of their slow burn second chance is a a rollercoaster. Tarran slowly settles in, with Quinn dogging her every move, and then the weird things start happening, and my attention shifted to the suspense. I like the small town (island) setting, all the quirky townspeople who are clearly wanting a second chance for these two, and I love all the Scottish culture seeping through every page. This may not have been my favorite story by Samantha, but I loved Tarran, the small Scottish island, and am very excited for Quinn's friend Murray's story next.
