Review: Tied Up by Sionna Fox

Review of Tied Up by Sionna Fox

When Kate breaks up with her longtime (5 years) dom/boyfriend to take a job across the country, it's because she's fallen out of love with him (or so she thinks). Now a year later she's back in Boston knowing she'll end up seeing him again, and not knowing how she'll react or how he'll react.

Ian has missed Kate every single minute since she left him high and dry a year ago. He still doesn't know why she left him, can't figure out how she suddenly fell out of love with him. He does figure it was something he did, or didn't do, but isn't sure of anything beyond that. And now that she's back, he wants to see her again, to talk to her, maybe even get her back.

But of course things don't go smoothly, don't go according to plan because life. And that's the part of this story that I like. It feels more realistic than most BDSM reads, than most so called romances. And yet, this isn't a romance, and that's what I don't like. Such a conundrum. I read romance for the escapism of it, because it's not really realistic most of the time. But I crave some realism because otherwise it feels so disconnected from my life that it's hard to relate to it. So on one hand, I appreciated Tied Up because it felt like a relationship that could actually happen, that could actually be happening with any random people I know. On the other hand, I didn't really connect with Tied Up because it's so simplistic and to the point that I felt at the end of it that I disliked it, disliked some of the characters. So 3 stars is honestly all I can think to rate it.

It's not horribly written or anything, in fact, it's very well written. It's not that the characters or the story are horrible, they are very realistic and easy to relate to in that respect. It's just that there's very little emotion for me to grasp, for me to fall in love with. I liked that the characters felt real, but I dislike that they didn't seem particularly passionate about each other or about life in general, and that's a big downer for me. If I based my rating solely on the story, this would probably be 5 stars. But if I base it on whether I like the characters and how they behave, it would be 2 stars. So I'll just stick with 3, as that's in the middle. That's what this story is - in the middle between unlikable characters with little relatable passion, and wonderful and passionate storytelling. I do think I'll probably read more from this author in the future, though, because I can see she is a great writer, I'll just hope in the future whatever I read from her will feature characters that are more likable and passionate.

Book boyfriends may not be real, but at least they won’t break my heart… or get another girl pregnant. I don’t do relationships. I get one whiff and run in the opposite direction. Review: Winter Interlude: An American Revolutionary Novelette (American Revolutionary Tales 2) by Regina Kammer

Review of Winter Interlude: An American Revolutionary Novelette by Regina Kammer Captain Samuel Taylor and Lieutenant Patrick Hamilton recall their first steamy encounter, which was a MFM threesome in a brothel. It morphed into more and now the two are contemplating their futures with the women they love, and their futures with each other. If you think times are hard for the LGBT community now, think of how hard they were during the American Revolution. Winter Interlude is well developed, which is surprising given its short length. I am so interested in knowing what is to become of Samuel and Patrick's forbidden relationship. Do they stay together? Or do they go their separate ways, and live out their lives with their women? Now that they've admitted their love for each other, how impossible would it be for them to be without each other? I have to know, now! If you like MM fiction and/or historical fiction, I highly recommend you give Winter Interlude a read. It
