Review of Tidy Up (Odd Jobs Book 4) by AJ Alexander
Morgan has been crushing on her boss, Theo, for awhile, even more so since a fleeting kiss he laid on her one night. But, he's so hot and cold with her that she isn't sure what the hell is going on with him. What she does know is that there's no way she's good enough for the richer than God, older Theo.
Theo is an untrusting, tormented man who craves control, and must have dominance in all things. He once gave his all to someone who betrayed him so horribly that now he's got nothing but blackness in his soul. At least, that's what he'd always thought until innocent little Morgan finds her way into his life when the cleaning agency sends her as his new maid. He can't help but want her, but he knows he can't have her. He's got a dark secret that she can't ever know - one that can only be conducted at an exclusive club. Yeah, THAT KIND of secret. But he is having so much trouble keeping his hands to himself. Would one little taste hurt?
I have to admit that Tidy Up ended up not being quite what I had expected. I definitely did not expect Theo to be so tormented or so wishy washy. For a man who craved control and exuded dominance, he wasn't much of a Dom. This is BDSM-lite for those who are wondering, so don't come into this thinking this is some hard-core kinky story, because it most certainly is not. The heat level is fairly low, actually, another area that surprised (and disappointed me) a little. There's only one significant scene between him and Morgan, and it's decidedly not BDSM or kinky at all. The other thing that disappointed me is that there is more than one scene between Theo and another woman. I don't always mind this in romances, but in this instance, it's pretty squicky. I didn't like how their scene came about, nor did I like that he continued to see her, in any capacity. The whole connection between Theo and this other woman was pretty gross to me. But...the reason for 3.5 stars rather than 3 is that ultimately, I liked the story, and I appreciated that both characters are layered, interesting, and substantial characters, especially Theo. So, 3.5 stars because I was a little disappointed that Tidy Up did not live up to my expectations, but not fewer stars because it's actually an entertaining story and the two leads are really likable.
