A clang echoes through the alley. My heart jolts in my chest. My phone. It lies at my feet. The screen is dark. Cracked.
Aghast, I look from the cause of the noise to the men in the alley. The man loosened his hold on Mr. Lewis. My boss lies on his side next to his briefcase, staring at me with wide, glassy eyes.
“F#ck,” the bulky man says, snarling as he trains his gaze on me.
Heatwaves of shock run through my body, propelling me back into action even as I lock eyes with the killer. Something passes between us—the knowledge that I’m done for. The way in which he tilts his head holds a strange kind of apology.
I don’t think. If I do, I’m dead. I spin on my heel and run.
The stocky man’s words follow me like a demon’s promise down the dark street.
“Get her and finish her.”


MY REVIEW


Anya was just walking home, minding her own business when she saw something she shouldn't have. Now she's being held by Saverio and actually developing some kind of something for him. She knows he's a cold, ruthless mobster, but he's also at times an absolute sweetheart with her. She knows she needs to keep her wits about her, and not fall for him, or more than her heart will get broken. But he's making it so hard for her to remain on her guard.


Something happened to Saverio when he locked eyes on the woman in the wrong place at the wrong time. He's not known for having feelings for any of the women in his life, but she draws him in with her innocence, her sass, and her unassuming outlook. He tells her he's keeping her for his benefit, but it might really be more for hers. And that will either be his downfall, or the best thing to ever happen to him.


Whew, what a beginning for Anya and Sav! Sav is, like so many of Charmaine's morally gray anti-heroes, complicated and layered - both cold and ruthless and loving, but for only a select few. He has a beast inside that he is hesitant to let out for fear of what it will do to Anya. But she's not nearly as soft as he thinks at first, and shows him she not only can handle him, but is coming to crave him and his dominant ways. But, though I can sense feelings developing between the two, there's also the threat looming over her, his dark world, and so many other threats that will make their journey a tough one. I can't wait though, to see just how they manage to navigate all the obstacles, and find their way to a happy ever after.
